Recently, I was delighted to be invited to speak at the inaugural TEDxOrtakoy. The event was hosted virtually in Istanbul on Saturday, May 25th 2020, following the theme of “+1”.
For those unfamiliar with TEDx events, TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
The TEDx program helps communities, organisations and individuals produce TED-style events at the local level, sharing ideas around the world.
My story inevitably was about why I chose my profession and what keeps me going. I felt it was important to share these with young people considering a career in surgery.
NB: With the event being hosted in Turkey, my TEDx talk was also presented in Turkish.
